Woolwich Steamboat Co

1834 The Woolwich Steamboat Co was established to suppy steam boats for the "short ferry" service on the Thames; the first boat brought out being the Sylph.
The company subsequently became the owner of a dozen or more boats which made 7 or 8 passages a day in summer, and 4 or 5 in winter.
The watermen on the river established their own business to compete with the Woolwich - the Waterman Steam Packet Co.
The competition between the two companies nearly ruined both of them and resulted in the Woolwich company buying the Waterman company
