at Fiddler's Island, Port Meadow, between the Jericho area of Oxford and Binsey village.

See Geograph entry for map.

This Bailey Bridge was erected in 2 hours in September 1947 by the Royal Engineers as a 'temporary' replacement for a flood-damaged wooden bridge.

The footpath from Oxford to Binsey crosses the Thames via the nearby Medley Footbridge, also known as the Rainbow Bridge.

Details

The bridge is 100 ft long, assembled from panels 10 ft long by 5 ft deep. The panels are connected by dowel pins, one at each corner (Fig 4). Each panel weighs 600 lbs. Transverse beams, known as transoms, support the deck. Raking bars, one to each panel, provide stabilising support between the panels and transoms (Fig 4).

Photo 6 shows a transom clamp (disconnected) between a panel upright and transom.
