WILLIAM MITCHELL GERRARD, who was born on 5th August 1883, went out to Burma at the age of 22 to join the engineering staff of Messrs. Steel Brothers and Company as assistant engineer. During his service he was the engineer in charge of various rice-milling properties, and acted for a time as superintending engineer to the company's rice and cotton departments. He also superintended the erection of two rice mills and a cotton ginning and oil crushing and refining plant.
For a short period his services were lent to a subsidiary company, the Indo-Burma Petroleum Company, in connection with work at the Syriam oil refinery. Since his retirement from Burma on 5th July 1933, Mr. Gerrard had not enjoyed good health, and his death occurred in Edinburgh on 29th June 1940.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921.
