The firm developed the Cossar two-cylinder web machine - the famed flat bed newspaper printing press.[1]
1914 Printers' engineers. Specialities: "Wharfedale" printing machines, perfecting machines and cutting machinery; "Cossar" patent flatbed web presses, screw clamp guillotines and "Diamond" self-clamp guillotines, "Universal" treadle platen. Employees 400 to 500. [2]
1921 PAYNE & SONS (OTLEY) Limited. Special Resolution. Passed 7th June, 1921. Confirmed 23rd June, 1921. AT an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Members of the above named Company, duly convened, and held at Atlas Works, Otley, on the 7th day of June, 1921, the following Special Resolution was duly passed : and at a subsequent Extraordinary General Meeting of the Members of the above named Company, also duly convened, and held at the same place, on the 23rd day of June, 1921, the following Special Resolution was duly confirmed :— " That having regard to the agreement of the 12th day of May, 1921, entered into by this Company for the sale of the undertaking of this Company and its assets and liabilities as a going concern to William Dawson and Sons (Otley) Limited, now Dawson, Payne and Elliott Limited it is desirable to wind up this Company, and accordingly that this Company be wound up voluntarily; and that Mr. John Gordon, of Leeds, Chartered Accountant, be and he be hereby appointed 'the Liquidator for the purpose of such winding-up."
