FREDERICK TURNBULL was born at Darlington in 1868. He received his technical education at the South Kensington Science and Art evening classes, which he attended while serving his apprenticeship in the works and drawing office of Messrs. M. Coulson and Company, Ltd., Spennymoor. On completing his apprenticeship he was employed as draughtsman in a number of firms, and in 1903 he joined the staff of Messrs. Dorman, Long and Company, Ltd., Middlesbrough.

After being employed for some time as a draughtsman he became representative of the company. He then spent two years in the United States studying structural and mechanical engineering with various firms. He started his own business, Messrs. F. He was responsible for the manufacture of coal loading plants installed in various parts of the country and for the bridge over the river Wansbeck at Blyth. Mr. Turnbull held the position of managing partner in this firm until 1908, when he became sole proprietor, and at the time of his death, which occurred on 19th December 1939, he was a director.

He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1913.
