Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railway
1864 "At one o'clock in the morning a locomotive, for some unknown and unfathomable reason, was standing by itself on a portion of the track which was perfectly straight and level for miles. At the same moment of time, two trains, one from the east and one from the west, approached and dashed into the stationary engine. All three locomotives and several of the cars were smashed and twelve or fifteen people lost their lives."[1]
