1801 September 3rd. Born at Milnetown of Bridgetown, Forfarshire, the son of Alexander Shanks, a wright, and his wife Elizabeth Ferguson.

1825 Established a spinning and machine making firm in Arbroath.

1834 Patented a process 'for preparing and dressing hemp and other fibrous substances'.

1829 March 23rd. Married in St, Vigeans, Forfarshire, to Ann Braid

1831 Birth of his son James Shanks

1840 Shanks founded the firm of Alexander Shanks and Son
