WOOLWICH ARSENAL FERRY. GALLIONS PIER, N. WOOLWICH AND THE ARSENAL.[1]

For a period during the first World War years when work on munitions at Woolwich Arsenal was at high pressure and thousands of workers were employed in shifts, there was a ferry operating between Gallions Pier and a temporary pier at the Arsenal.

Two paddle steamers were employed one being the RED CROSS which was chartered from the Port Sanitary Authority at Deptford and the other a Wallasey ferry steamer from the Mersey, the JOHN HERRON.
