WILLIAM WISEMAN was, born on the 26th of January, 1843, at Grassington, a village 9 miles from Skipton in Yorkshire. He received his early education in the village school, and subsequently, when his parents removed to Bradford, at the Old Parish Church National School in that town. There he showed great ability in mathematics and in freehand and architectural drawing, which was further developed by personal and private effort during his first situation in the office of the late Mr. Woodcock, Land Surveyor, Bradford.
In 1863 he enlisted in the Corps of Royal Engineers, and, passing through the Indian branch of the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, with great credit, he proceeded as a sergeant to India. There he went through the course of training for a subordinate at the Thomason Civil Engineering College, Roorkee, and, being a neat draughtsman in the sense of being able to copy and colour drawings, he caught the eye of the late Major-General Medley, R.E., then Principal of the College, with the result that, on passing for the rank of overseer, instead of being sent out on works, he was posted Assistant Drawing Master to the College.....[more]
