WILLIAM THOMAS EDWARD BARKER was a director of Messrs. David Rowell and Company, whom he joined as a draughtsman in 1901, and was for many years chief engineer and manager for the firm.
He designed and was in charge of the erection of several steel suspension bridges in this country and in South America, and was closely connected with the improvement of heating and ventilating systems, having been the inventor of the "Barrol" ventilators and chimney pots.
He was born in 1873, and apprenticed in the shops of a firm of agricultural engineers in Norfolk.
He then spent several years as draughtsman with various firms, and was head draughtsman with Messrs. Robert Boyle and Son, ventilating engineers, before joining Messrs. David Rowell and Company.
He became a Member of the Institution in 1914 and his death occurred on 28th December 1928.
