Born in Edinburgh; his father, Thomas Mylne (d. 1763), was a master mason.

Brother of Robert Mylne

1755 The brothers travelled to Rome, after which William returned to Edinburgh.

1822 When William Mylne started a new Minute Book he used the heading "Engineers' Society" in the reports of each session until 1869, when he changed it to "Smeatonian Society".
