WILLIAM MONRO PEARSE, son of the late Mr. Geddie Pearse, then Engineer to the British Gas Co, was born on the 10th of March, 1840, and was educated at Merchant Taylors’ School,
He served a pupilage to James Simpson and Co, of Pimlico, from September, 1857, to March, 1869, and to John Penn and Sons, of Greenwich, from the latter date until March 1862.
He was then for some months in the drawing office of the late John Hodgson Jones, and from February, 1863, was for a short period an Assistant Engineer in the service of the European Gas Company at Havre. Having private means he then ceased to follow the profession for some years.
In January, 1875, Mr. Pearse accepted an appointment as an Assistant Engineer to the Commercial Gas Co, and had charge, under the Robert Jones, and H. E. Jones, of the erection of the new works at Poplar. Mr. Pearse remained in the service of the Company - as Inspector of its most important district - until his death, which took place on the 26th of February, 1895, from blood-poisoning resulting from internal hemorrhage.
His constant endeavour was to do thoroughly whatever it fell to his duty to perform, and his disposition being kindly and genial, he made and retained several warm friendships.
Mr. Pearse was elected an Associate Member on the 5th of February, 1884.
