WILLIAM MILWARD ALLEN was born in York in 1841.
He was educated at Bramham College, Yorkshire, and served an apprenticeship of five years at the locomotive works of the North Eastern Railway, at York.
From 1861 to 1866 he was in the Company's drawing-office and assistant to the locomotive engineer.
In the latter year he was engaged under the late Mr. R. B. Longridge, Chief Engineer of the Boiler Insurance and Steam Power Co., Ltd., Manchester, and in 1879 he was appointed an assistant engineer of the Boiler Department of the Company. This position he held until his retirement in 1906.
His death took place in Manchester on 11th June 1920, at the age of seventy-nine.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1882.
