"Major WILLIAM LYALL POWRIE was associated with the firm of Messrs. Furnival and Company, Ltd., printers' engineers, London, for forty years. He received his practical training from 1889 to 1895 in all departments of Messrs. Peter Brotherhood's engineering works, Westminster, and during that period attended the Birkbeck Institution for his technical instruction.
After gaining experience as fitter and erector to that firm he was employed as engineer to Messrs. D. Allen and Sons, Harrow, with whom he remained until 1898 when he began his long connection with Messrs. Furnival with the post of assistant manager. He was promoted to be general manager of the London area in 1913 and from 1926 to the end of his active career acted as representative for the firm. Major Powrie's death occurred in London on 9th October 1946 in his seventy-third year. He had been an Associate Member of the Institution for forty-seven years, having been elected in 1899. During the war of 1914-18 he served in the Royal Field Artillery with the rank of captain and subsequently held a commission as major in the Royal Engineers, being in charge of a depot at Rouen."
