1851 George Johnson 39, brick maker, living in Hunslet with Alias Johnson 33, William Johnson 13, brick maker, Ann Johnson 7, Josh Johnson 5, Mary Johnson 3, Martha Johnson 1[2]

1860 Having designed brick-making machinery which was more reliable than that then available, William responded to demand and began making the machinery for sale, which was the start of his business William Johnson.
