"WILLIAM JAMES BEVINS BARRETT who was born in 1883, received his education at Leicester Technical School and served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Elwood Brothers, from 1900 to 1903. He then held in succession the positions of junior draughtsman to the British United Shoe Machine Company, Ltd., Leicester, and designer of machine tools at Coventry Ordnance Works. He continued in 1910 with three years' employment on works maintenance for Willans and Robinson, Ltd., Rugby. On completion of an engagement as chief inspector and assistant to the works manager of the Imperial Typewriter Co, Leicester, he secured the appointment of works engineer and chief of the plant drawing office for the Brush Electrical Engineering Company, Ltd., Loughborough. Subsequently he went into business on his own account and established the firm of W. J. Barrett, Ltd., general engineers, Leicester. Mr. Barrett continued in business until his death, which occurred on 13th July 1951. He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1922.
