"WILLIAM HENRY ROWLAND, whose death in his seventy-fifth year occurred on 13th November 1945, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1920. He received his technical education at the Manchester School of Technology and served his apprenticeship in the drawing office of Messrs. John Holroyd and Company, Ltd., from 1889 to 1890, and with Messrs. Rowland and Company, Ltd., from 1890 to 1895.
On the completion of a four years' engagement as engineer and manager to the Irwell Steam Ferry Co, in 1899, he went into business on his own account as manager and owner of a yacht and launch building concern at Bangor, North Wales. From 1911 until his retirement in 1938, he was actively engaged as a naval architect and marine surveyor. Mr. Rowland was the patentee of the Connaught motor cycle engine. He also achieved considerable distinction as a designer of racing yachts."
