WILLIAM HENNY GREENE, formerly one of the three Commissioners of Victorian Railways, died at Melbourne on the 7th December, 1902, in the 73rd year of his age.
Born at Drogheda, Ireland, on the 23rd March, 1830, he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and at the Liverpool Collegiate Institution.
From 1852 to 1854 he served a pupilage to his cousin, Arthur Greene, under whom he was employed in Spain on the survey and construction of the Cordova and Malaga and the Madrid and Aranjuez Railways. Ho then went to Victoria, where, after practising privately for a time, he entered in 1855 the service of the Victorian Government Railways.
During that period of service, which lasted until 1878, Mr. Greene acted as District Engineer of various sections, and later as Maintenance Engineer of the line from Melbourne to Echuca.
Between 1878 and 1882 Mr. Greene filled the post of Consulting Engineer to the Tasmanian Government, carrying out at the same time a considerable amount of surveying and engineering work in New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania.
In 1882 he was appointed Chief Engineer of Existing Railways to the Government of Victoria, and he became subsequently one of the Railway Commissioners of that Colony.
Mr. Greene was elected a Member of the Institution on the 7th December, 1886.
