WILLIAM HARDY was in the service of Messrs. Joseph Fisher and Sons, Ltd., of Newry, Northern Ireland, as marine superintendent for the very long period of forty years. He served his apprenticeship with the Bessbrook Spinning Company, Ltd., in whose employment he continued for some years. He then joined the Dundalk and Newry Steam Packet Company, Ltd., and served at sea for five years as second engineer, subsequently being employed for a similar period as chief engineer. After some two years further experience in the latter capacity with the Teadcastle Line, of Dublin, he took up his final appointment at Newry, retiring in 1942.
During his long tenure of office Mr. Hardy acted as consultant to the Carlingford Lough Commissioners. His association with the Institution dated back to 1894, when he was elected an Associate Member, his transference to Membership taking place in 1910. In addition he was an Associate Member of the Institution of Naval Architects. His death occurred at Newry on 23rd July 1944.
