"WILLIAM EVAN ROBERTS was born in 1873 at Liverpool. He received his general education there, and during his period of apprenticeship he attended Liverpool University. He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. O. and D. Williams, Liverpool, from 1889 to 1895, and with Messrs. John H. Wilson and Company, Ltd., Liverpool, from 1895 to 1896. From 1896 to 1901 he served at sea on various cargo steamships and tankers.
He then held a position with Messrs. John Brown and Company, Ltd., Clydebank, during the completion of the SS Merton, and he subsequently served as fourth and third engineer on this ship.
