"WILLIAM ERNEST GRUNDY, who was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1920, retained a close connection with engineering in Blackburn during the whole of his professional career. After receiving his practical training with James Thompson and Sons, Blackburn, and Cammell, Laird and Company, Ltd., Birkenhead, he secured an appointment as works manager to Clayton Goodfellow and Company, Ltd., with which concern he remained for nearly twenty years.
During this long period, he was closely concerned with the construction and erection of vertical and horizontal engines of high horse-power for various important industrial firms. In 1911 he went into partnership as a consulting engineer and architect with Mr. Thomas Frost and, on the dissolution of the partnership seven years later, he continued to practise on his own account to the end of his active career. In the course his career he was responsible for the design and construction of numerous local cotton mills. Mr. Grundy's death occurred on 21st January 1951 at the age of seventy-eight."
