WILLIAM COOPER was born at Easington, Durham, on 31st December 1843.
In 1860 he commenced an apprenticeship of two years with the West Hartlepool Steam Navigation Co., and served a further two years with Messrs. Pile, Spence and Co., of West Hartlepool, on the termination of which he continued with the latter firm for over two years as foreman and draughtsman.
In 1866 he went as engineer and draughtsman to the Iron, Coal, and Harbour Works at Tondu and Porthcawl for Messrs. John Brogden and Sons, with whom he remained until 1872; he was then engaged by Messrs. Edward Shotton and Co., as superintendent of various ship and machinery work. With this firm he stayed until 1883, and then started on his own account in North Shields, as consulting engineer and marine surveyor, and acted for several firms on the Tyne and in Leith, to which latter place in 1890 be transferred his business.
He invented an improved slide-valve indicator.
His death took place.at Leith on 8th May 1904, at the age of sixty.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1900.
