1844 Born at Barnstaple the son of William Joseph Rafarel (1806-1879) and his wife France (Elizabeth ? )

1851 Living at Bear Street, Barnstaple: Elizabeth Jeve (age 68 Hil Marton, Wilts), A Widow and Gas Lessee employing 8 men. With her son William Rafarel (age 45 born Sandford, Devon), Superintendent of the Gas Works; and his wife Frances Rafarel (age 31 born Barnstaple) and their two sons Richard Rafarel (age 8 born Barnstaple) and Claude Rafarel (age 6 born Barnstaple. Also her (EJ's) niece Amelia Maggs (age 45 born Bristol). Two servants.[1]

1861 Living at 37 Bear Street, Barnstaple: William Joseph Rafarel (age 55 born Creedy(?), Devon, Lessee of the Gas Works employing 12 hands. With his wife Elizabeth Tesza Rafarel (age 41 born Barnstaple) and their two sons Richard Jeve Rafarel (age 18 born Barnstaple), Clerk Banker's; and Claude Rafarel (age 16 born Barnstaple), a Scholar. One servant [2]

1868 Claude Rafarel is appointed manager of the Barnstaple Gas-Light Co.[3]

1871 Living at 2 Victoria Road, Barnstaple: William Claude Rafarel (age 26 born Barnstaple), a Gas Engineer. With his wife Emma P. C. Rafarel (age 27 born at sea off Coimbra, Portugal). Also his father-in-law Charles R. Chapman (age 51 born Southampton), a retired Master Mariner. One servant.[4]

1881 Living at Portland House, Victoria Road, Barnstaple: William C. Rafarel (age 36 born Barnstaple), a Gas Engineer. With wife Emma P. C. Rafarel (age 37 born Portugal (sea)) and their son Claude Rafarel (age one month) born Barnstaple. Also a visitor and three servants [5]

1891 Living at Gorwell House, Barnstaple: William C. Rafarel (age 46 born Barnstaple), an Ironfounder and Employer. With his wife Emma P. C. rafarel (age 47 born Portugal) and their sons Claude D. J. Rafarel (age 10 born Barnstaple) and William C. C. Chapman Rafarel (age 87 born Barnstaple). Three servants [7]

1901 Living at Gorwell House, Barnstaple: William Claude Rafarel (age 56 born Barnstaple), an Ironfounder and Gas Engineer - and Employer. With his wife Emma Palaryta Coimbra Rafarel(age 57 born at sea) and son William Claude Chapman (age 18 born Barnstaple) and father-in-law Charles Robert Chapman (age 81 born Soham Ferry, Hants), a retired yacht captain. Also three servants and two nurses. [8]

1917 September 26th. Died aged 73 at Totnes. Of Knowle, Braunton. Late of Gorwell, Barnstaple, and the son of William Joseph Rafarel.[9]

1924 January 22nd. Death of Emma Palmyra Coimbra Rafarel of Knowle, Braunton age 80 years. Interment at the Paris church.[10]
