WILLTAM BARRON NORTON, born on the 28th April, 1862, was the fifth son of the late Mr. Henry Norton, J.P., of Green Hill, Caermarthen.
He served an apprenticeship to Mr. J. A. B. Williams, who was at that time Borough and Water Engineer of Cardiff. He was subsequently employed by Mr. Williams on surveys and drawings in connection with the new water-supply to that town, and in 1886 and 1887 acted as Resident Engineer on the Llanishen Reservoir and Filter-beds, which formed part of the works. He also filled a similar position on the relieving storage reservoir at Blackbrook.
From 1888 to 1895 he was employed under Mr. Harpur, the present Borough Engineer of Cardiff, on surveys and drawings for new roads and bridges, and an ornamental park lake of 32 acres, the construction of which he afterwards superintended.
In 1895 Mr. Norton went to Manchester, where he was engaged under the City Surveyor, Mr. de Courcy Meade, for three years. In August, 1898, he was appointed one of the Engineers to the Niger State Protectorate. There he unfortunately contracted pneumonia, which proved fatal on the 11th December, 1898.
Mr. Norton was elected an Associate Member on the 6th December, 1892.
