WILLIAM ANDREW YOUNG served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Hawthorns and Company, engineers and shipbuilders, of Leith, and ultimately became manager and a partner in the firm.
In 1890 he became associated with the late Mr. Lobnitz at Renfrew, and upon the death of the senior partner he was appointed chairman to Messrs. Lobnitz and Company.
Although he retired in 1910, he again took up the responsibilities of managing director of the Renfrew firm upon the outbreak of war, thereby allowing Sir Frederick Lobnitz to take up the duties of Director of Munitions for Scotland. He continued his business activity until 1919.
For a term Mr. Young was president of the Clyde Shipbuilders' Association, and he was also a member of the Clyde Trust and of Renfrew Town Council at the time when the Renfrew. Dock was promoted.
He became a Member of the Institution in 1887, and was also a Member of the Institution of Naval Architects.
He died at the age of 80, on 25th November 1929.
