WILFRED THOMAS SWINGLER, who had worked in British Guiana for the last sixteen years, died there in tragic circumstances on 23rd December 1939. He was born in 1901 at Derby and received his technical education at the Derby Technical College from 1915 to 1923. He served his apprenticeship in the drawing office and estimating department of Messrs. G. Fletcher and Company, Ltd., sugar and mining engineers, of Derby, from 1916 to 1922, and continued with this firm for two years as a draughtsman.
In 1924 he was appointed resident engineer on the Port Mourant Plantation, Berbice, British Guiana, and in this capacity he was responsible for the running maintenance, and modernization of the sugar factory, the drainage and irrigation plants, the electric lighting system, the estate railway, and the mechanical tillage. He also carried out work for the Rose Hall and Skeldon plantations, British Guiana. He was associated with many of the engineering developments in British Guiana relating to the sugar industry.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1935.
