1930 As a result of the amalgamation of the Pearson and Knowles group of companies with the Wigan Coal and Iron Co, 2 new companies were formed to hold the coal and steel interests separately. The coal business would be called the Wigan Coal Corporation Ltd. The iron and steel business would be called the Lancashire Steel Corporation[1]. The 2 new companies were formed under the auspices of the Securities Management Trust, formed by the Bank of England to facilitate reconstruction of the iron and steel industry[2]. Lancashire Steel Corporation controlled the Wigan Coal Corporation[3].

Controlled 24 collieries with 14,000 employees[4] from Pearson and Knowles Ltd, Wigan Coal and Iron Co, Moss Hall Collieries, Wigan Junction Colliery Co.
