c.1861 Pile, Spence and Co took over the West Hartlepool Steam Navigation Co, which had a fleet of nine cargo and passenger vessels.

1899 The company was registered on 2 March, to take over the businesses of the West Hartlepool Steam Navigation Co and Messrs. J. E. Guthe and Co. [1]
