1896 The company was registered on 28 April, to take over the business of the Wearmouth Coal Co (registered in 1878). [1]

1897 Began sinking colliery on the site of the abandoned Wear Steel Works, on the north bank of the River Wear, about two miles above Sunderland.

1900 Three shafts had been completed for working the "Maudlin" and "Hutton" seams.
