1922 Obituary [1]

Captain WALTER ROBERTON MARSH, R.A.O.C., was born at Southampton on 30th November 1882, and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Day, Summers, Ltd., engineers and shipbuilders, Southampton.

He next became draughtsman and assistant to the superintendent of the Great Western Railway at Fishguard, three years later spending a short period with Messrs. W. H. Allen, Sons and Co., of Bedford.

This was followed by an appointment as chief engine draughtsman at the Southampton works of Messrs. Harland and Wolff, with whom he also served as outside assistant- manager during the early stages of the War.

In February 1916 he entered the Ordnance College, Woolwich, passing thence to Sheerness as Inspector of Ordnance Machinery, Thames Defences, and in September of the same year held a similar position at Rawal Pindi, India.

After serving over three years in Mesopotamia and the North West Frontier, he was invalided home in 1919, and on the restoration of his health he was stationed at Pembroke Dock for a few months, after which he was drafted to the Army of the Rhine, serving there until his death on 19th April 1922, in his fortieth year.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1919.
