Walter Bergius

Walter Bergius ( -1949) of the Bergius Car and Engine Co

1949 June. Died. 'Mr Walter Bergius, chairman of the engineering firm of the same name which manufactures the Kelvin marine engine at Dobbie's Loan, Glasgow, died on Saturday at his home, 26 Whittingehame Drive, Glasgow. Born in Glasgow, Mr Bergius gained his early engineering experience there and in 1904 he founded the Bergius Car and Engine Company in small premises at 169 Finnieston Street. At first he manufactured the Kelvin motor car with an engine of his own design, but two years later he modified this to suit marine purposes and commenced production of the engine which made his name known throughout the world. Originally the engines were petrol and paraffin driven, but the company changed over to diesel engine production in 1932. Mr Bergius was a keen yachtsman and two yachts of his own design which he sailed for many years, were well known on the Clyde.'
