Vulkan Jernstøberi og mekaniske Verksted (Vulkan Iron Foundry and Mechanical Workshop) was established in 1873.

The first Director was Ferdinand Ludvig Vibe (1838-1912). He went bankrupt in 1884 and had to sell Vulkan.

One of the new owners was engineer Axel Ingvald Spone Amundsen. He became a director and co-owner in 1884 and sole owner in 1897, leading the firm until his death in 1939.

In the early days, the firm produced castings, and later added boilers and steam machinery, bridges, structural steelwork and other products. Their first bridges were delivered in 1886 to the Norwegian State Railways and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

In 1968, the iron foundry was closed down. The company moved to Furuset, where it was eventually merged with Intervison and Christen Smith to become Vulkan Smith, based in Bærum.

The site and surviving buildings have been developed for leisure and office use.

From the ULEFOS website [1]:-

The company (Ulefos) was first established in 1873, under the name of Vulkan Iron Foundry and Mechanical Workshop, in Christiania.

Vulkan Industrier became part of the Cappelen Group in 1981. In 1991, Vulkan Industrier was merged with another Cappelen company, Engineer Christen Smith . This was the start of the company Vulkan Smith.

In 2010, Vulkan Smith took over the sale and marketing of the Cappelen Group's 'street goods'. In 2014, it was decided that all Cappelen Gruppen companies within certain sectors should change their name to Ulefos.
