TORBEN CHRISTIAN BILLETOP was born in Denmark in 1861 and studied at the Naval College, Copenhagen, where he received the Chief Engineer's Certificate and Diploma.
He came to the Clyde fifty years ago, and was for a number of years chief assistant to Dr. A. C. Kirk at the works of Messrs. Robert Napier and Sons of Glasgow.
Later he was for some years with Messrs. Vickers of Barrow-in-Furness, and subsequently he was chief assistant to Sir James McKechnie.
He was then for thirty years with Messrs. Henry Watson and Sons of Newcastle, for whom he became managing director. During this period he patented many improvements for auxiliary machinery.
During the last five years of his life he was associated with his son in a consulting capacity at Newcastle, and was identified with many more patents, including the well-known sliding hatch beams.
Mr. Billetop, who died on 19th May 1931, had been a Member of the Institution since 1897, and he was also a Member of the Institution of Naval Architects.
