Sir Titus Salt (1803-1876), founder of Titus Salt, Sons and Co.
1803 Born in Leeds[1]
Educated at Heath School near Wakefield.
Worked with his father in Bradford, wool dealing.
1824 Went into business. Acquired 3 small mills near Bradford
1830 Married Caroline Whitlam, at St.James Church, Great Grimsby, Lincoln, England[2]
1836 A Liverpool broker showed him some bales of alpaca hair bought by Spaniards from Peru. Invented alpaca as a clothing material.
1843 Birth of Titus Salt, Junior
c.1851 Acquired land at Shipley, near the Midland Railway and the River Aire, for Salt's Mill - as well as his mill, he built 9.5 acres of top quality housing and infrastructure were provided including parks, hospitals , schools and churches for his workers.
1851 Titus Salt 47, worsted spinner and stuff manufacturer, employing upward of 3000 work people, and magistrate of Bradford, lived in Hipperholme cum Brighouse, Bradford, with Caroline Salt 58, William H Salt 19, George Salt 17, Amelia Salt 15, Edward Salt 13, Herbert Salt 10, Fanny C Salt 9, Titus Salt 7, William Salt 5, Mary Salt 1[3]
c.1852 William Fairbairn completed his work fitting out the mill at Saltaire
1871 At the last census (before 1877) there were 820 houses and 4389 persons at the mill.
Died 29th December 1876.[4]
