There have been two unrelated bridges with this name. The present one is a small footbridge across the Bridgewater Canal. The other was an iron bowstring road bridge across the River Irwell, connecting Manchester and Salford.
The wrought iron bowstring bridge across the River Irwell had girders 152 ft long. Designed by Alfred Mountain Fowler. Ironwork contractor E. T. Bellhouse and Co of Manchester. Masonry contractor Abraham Pilling of Bolton. Abutments: red Runcorn sandstone. Bed stones, string courses, and pilaster caps from Horsforth Wood quarries. Paving flags were Caithness stone.[1]. It was presumably removed when the Manchester Ship Canal was constructed.
