1875 Thomas Richardson Ellin developed a new hand tool in Sheffield, which he adapted from a simple implement made by a Sheffield hand grinder.
1888 Thomas R. Ellin publicised his range of pressed steel hand tools
1889 Registered a number of designs of products and patents some of them, in particular the Footprint wrench and Footprint adjustable spanners.
He set up an engineering company, manufacturing his hand tools . This was to become a world-renowned brand. Over 20 million of these have now been sold worldwide and are still being manufactured today.

1948 Acquired by John J Jewitt Snr and run independently of Alfred Ridge by his son John J Jewitt.
This became Footprint Tools one of the largest family-owned, hand tool manufacturers in the UK. Footprint Tools, owned by the Jewitt family since 1948 are currently in their fourth generation of family members to work there.
