This became [[Footprint Tools]] one of the largest family-owned, hand tool manufacturers in the UK. Footprint Tools, owned by the Jewitt family since 1948 are currently in their fourth generation of family members to work there.

1875 Thomas Richardson Ellin developed a new hand tool in Sheffield, which he adapted from a simple implement made by a Sheffield hand grinder.

1888 Thomas R. Ellin publicised his range of pressed steel hand tools

1889 Registered a number of designs of products and patents some of them, in particular the Footprint wrench and Footprint adjustable spanners.

He set up an engineering company, manufacturing his hand tools . This was to become a world-renowned brand. Over 20 million of these have now been sold worldwide and are still being manufactured today.
