Thomas Mudge (1715-1794)

Born 1715 in Exeter

Uncle of William Mudge

Clock and watch maker who invented the lever escapement.

Apprenticed to George Graham. c.1755 formed a partnership with William Dutton. His first detached-lever escapement watch was completed in 1770, and purchased by George III for Queen Charlotte. He later moved to Plymouth to devote his time to the perfection of marine chronometers.[1]

1794 Died on 14 November in Walworth
