Thomas Long Colley (1840-1868)

1870 Obituary [1]

MR. THOMAS LONG COLLEY, son of Mr. John Long Colley, of Plymouth, was born on the 18th of August, 1840.

After serving a pupilage of five years under Mr. Richard Townsend (M. Inst,. C.E.), superintending Civil Engineer of H. M. steam-yard at Keyham, and Resident Engineer of Plymouth breakwater, Mr. Colley was engaged for three years at the Keyham North Basin Extension Works, as Engineer for Mr. Jackson, the contractor, and in that capacity was employed in setting out the work, levelling, &c.

His ability, especially in dock work, there manifested itself, and he subsequently acted in a similar position for the same contractor during the construction of the Exmouth docks, the works of which were completed under his supervision. He was then for between two and three years in private practice, principally occupied in connection with the supply of water to towns. He carried out the waterworks at Exmouth.

His career, which bid fair to be so successful, was prematurely cut short by his untimely death on the 9th of July, 1868, at the early age of twenty-seven years. and within a few months after his election as an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He left a widow and two children.
