"THOMAS JOY DURNFORD was in the service of the Buenos Ayres Great Southern Railway for thirty-nine years. He was educated at the Grammar School, Ashford, Kent, and the City and Guilds of London Institute. After serving his time under the late Mr. James Stirling in the locomotive workshops of the South Eastern Railway, at Ashford, from 1895 to 1900, he spent several years as a draughtsman with the North British Locomotive Company, Ltd., of Glasgow, Messrs. Robert Stephenson and Company, Ltd., of Darlington, and the Midland Railway at Derby.
He began his long connection with the Buenos Ayres Great Southern Railway in 1907 with the appointment of assistant chief draughtsman, and successively became chief draughtsman, locomotive works manager, and works general manager. More recently he had been technical adviser to the director of development until his retirement in 1946. Mr. Durnford was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1908 and was transferred to Membership in 1919. His death occurred, at the age of seventy, at Buenos Aires on 21st January 1949."
