THOMAS DOUGLAS MILNE served his apprenticeship from 1894 to 1899 with Messrs. Glenfield and Kennedy, Ltd., of Kilmarnock and continued in the employment of that firm until 1901. After a year's experience at the Wallsend Slipway and Engineering Company's Yard, at Troon, he went to New Zealand and for the next four years was employed as marine engineer, during which period he obtained his first-class Marine Engineering Certificate.
From 1906 until 1911 he was in the service of the New Zealand Government's Mines Department as erector and engineer in charge of briquetting works. After a further period at sea, during which he rose to be chief engineer, he was engaged for the next two years by the Motueka Harbour Board as engineer and dredge-master. From 1915 to 1917 he was second engineer at the Christchurch Waterworks pumping station. He then entered upon his final position and for the remainder of his career, a period of twenty-six years, was instructor in engineering at the Nelson Technical College, and became responsible for that department to the Superintendent of Technical Education.
Mr. Milne, whose death occurred on 20th August 1943, in his sixty-fifth year, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921.
