Alderman Thomas Canning, J. P., A.M Inst. C.E., one of Newport's best known public men, (1849-1919), engineer and manager of the Newport Gas Co.
1849 Born at Kildare on February and was educated at the Royal College of Science, Ireland.
He commenced his professional career at Bristol, and subsequently managed the gaswork at Stroud.
1874 he was appointed engineer and manager of the Newport Gas Company, and held that position up to the time of his death.
1884 Designed and supervised construction of the new gas works at Newport
He was a member of the Incorporated Gas Institute and had been a member of the Newport Corporation since 1888.
He took a keen interest in educational matters, and for many years was chairman of the Technical Instruction Committee, and one of the Governors of the intermediate school.
