THOMAS BELL, who died in London in March 1884, was the eldest son of Mr. Thomas Bell of Walker and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and was born in the latter town in January 1846. He was educated at Herchiston Castle, Edinburgh, and subsequently spent some time in Paris, where he attended lectures at the Sorbonne. He completed his education at the University of Gottingen in Germany.
On returning to England, the deceased entered the office of Messrs. Bell Brothers at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and he continued to take an active part in the management of the extensive business of that firm until the latter part of 1882, when the state of his health, which had been a source of anxiety for some time previously, made it necessary for him to give up work. He therefore proceeded to the residence of his father in Spain, where he spent some months in the hope of recruiting his strength. Returning to London, he grew gradually worse until the time of his death.
Deceased became a member of the Institute in 1872.
