Dr. BROWN graduated as B.Sc. in Engineering (including Naval Architecture) at Glasgow University in 1921, and was awarded the degree of D.Sc. in 1927 for original research. He was also awarded the Associateship of the Royal Technical College, Glasgow.
In 1928 he was elected to the Robert Blair Fellowship, and proceeded to Harvard University, where he carried out further research in connexion with internal-combustion engines, his work having been recognized in the award of the degree of S.M. (Harvard).
Since 1935 Dr. Brown has been technical manager of the marine engine works of Messrs. R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Ltd., Newcastle upon Tyne, having previously held the position of assistant general manager of the marine engine department of Messrs. Alexander Stephen and Sons, Ltd., Linthouse, Govan, Glasgow, with whom he served his apprenticeship.

In 1928 he was elected to the Robert Blair Fellowship, proceeded to Harvard University and graduated as Master of Science (S.M.). He is also an Associate of The Royal Technical College.
He later became assistant general manager, marine engine department, Alexander Stephen and Sons Ltd., with which he had served his apprenticeship. In 1935 he was appointed technical manager of the marine engine works of R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Co. Ltd.
In 1944 Dr. Brown took up his present position as research director of the Parsons and Marine Engineering Turbine Research and Development Association.
