1898 'A COMPETITOR WITH THE RAILWAY. A trial was made on the Newcastle to Durham road Saturday with a steam motor tractor built by Messrs Toward and Co., Newcastle, and bought by Mr George Handyside. Drawing an ordinary omnibus containing people, it travelled to Durham from Newcastle, a distance of 14 miles, without stop in two hours, and the return journey was made with similar success. All the hills, even in Durham City, were easily taken by the engine. Messrs Philipson, Newcastle, are to build special omnibus for the tractor, and the owner intends to attempt a regular passenger service between Newcastle and Hull, via Sunderland and Stockton, at the rate of one halfpenny per mile. If the experiment prove successful will extend the system.' [4]
