1952 Obituary [1]
"SYDNEY ALFRED MONTGOMERY, whose death in his fifty-first year occurred on 1st April 1950, was elected a student of the Institution in 1922, and transferred to Graduateship in 1923 and to Associate Membership in 1927. He received his practical training (which was interrupted by two years' service in the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force as pilot officer), between 1917 and 1923 with Ruston and Hornsby, Ltd., Lincoln, and during that period attended classes at Lincoln Municipal Technical School. From 1923 to 1926 he was engaged as mechanical engineer to Walker and Greig, Ltd., Colombo, to which firm he was responsible for the design and erection of steel-built factories and their equipment generally. On his return to England in 1927, Mr. Montgomery secured an appointment as deputy manager of the colonial department of overseas sales of Clayton and Shuttleworth, Ltd., his duties in this direction taking him to the Middle East. Two years later he joined the staff of Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., in London and for the next thirteen years acted as sales engineer for G.I. engines. He then designed and operated a peat briquetting factory. More recently he had been concerned with the design and operation of pulverized fuel equipment. These activities involved visits to Denmark, Ireland, and the United States."
