Mr. STEPHEN BURRIDGE, a managing director of the well-known firm of Messrs. John Brown & Co., Limited, who died suddenly in London on the 10th August 1888, was born on the 24th March 1823, at Cowes, in the Isle of Wight. He was in his sixty-sixth year at the time of his death.
The early part of Mr. Burridge's business career was spent at Fleetwood, in the prosperity of which place he interested himself energetically. He left Fleetwood in 1860, on being invited to take the management of the firm of Messrs. Carver & Co., Manchester, where he remained till 1874, when he was appointed a managing director of Messrs. John Brown & Co., Limited, Atlas Works, Sheffield. Mr Burridge was also managing director of the Luchana Mining Co. in Spain.
Deceased, who took little part in public business, was a member of the Sheffield Cutlers' Company; and was on the Committee of the Sheffield Technical School, of which he was one of the guarantors. He was also a magistrate for the borough, having been elected, although himself a Conservative, by the late Liberal Government in 1885.
He became a member of this Institute in 1876.
