STANLEY JOHN REED, R.N.R., born at Stoke Newington on the 10th November, 1880, was killed in the explosion on H.M.S. “Princess Irene” on the 27th May, 1915.
He received his practical training at Messrs. Vickers’ Barrow works, specializing in turbines and submarines, and afterwards joined the staff of Sir John Biles, M. Inst. C.E., with whom he was associated in the design of the machinery for the London and South Western Railway Company’s Channel boats.
At the date of his untimely death he was employed by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company.
He was the author of a book on Turbines applied to Marine Propulsion, and of a Paper on the same subject read before The Institution, for which he was awarded a Telford premium.
Mr. Reed was elected an Associate Member on the 3rd April, 1906.
