1861 Company founded.
1872 Smith and McLean were merchants, manufacturers, galvanizers, steel and iron plate and sheet rollers. They acquired Gartcosh Iron and Steel Co and owned Clyde Galvanizing Works at Mavisbank and Port Glasgow, the Iron and steel works at Milnwood and Gartcosh Rolling Mills and Iron and Steel Works.
1900 Private company. The company was registered on 12 November, to acquire a business of steel and iron sheet and bar manufacturers.[1]
By 1930 Colvilles had acquired the majority of ordinary shares in Smith and McLean.
1951 Nationalised under the Iron and Steel Act; became part of the Iron and Steel Corporation of Great Britain[2]
By 1953 Colvilles had acquired the whole share capital of the company.
1954 Subsidiary of Colvilles[3].
1961 Manufacturers of steel sheets, black and galvanised, plain and corrugated; steel bars and sections; "Griffin Brand" steel gutters, down pipes and allied products. 1,450 employees. [4]
