A 4.5 mile extension to the Slamannan Railway, the Slamannan and Borrowstounness Railway, was built to Bo'ness, which opened on 17 March 1851.

The 26 June 1846 Act of Parliament authorising this extension, also allowed the railway to lease the harbour at Bo'ness but this lease was not followed through.
